What's New for the 2019 Nissan Altima?

For 2019, big cosmetic and technological changes to the Altima ensure it'll accomplish this mission better than ever. Compact sedans are popular due to their thrifty use of gas and comfortable quarters for both passengers and freight. The Nissan Altima has been a top choice in this category by fulfilling these expectations expertly. Just take a look at these updates.

Which Trims has Nissan Chosen for 2019?

The 2019 Altima has simplified things a bit by reducing the model lineup from seven models in the 2018 edition to five for the coming year. These five models, the S, SR, SV, SL, and Platinum, all possess the same basic body that's similar to its 2018 predecessor in its side profile except that it sports a longer engine bay.

Beyond this, the most outstanding exterior change is a front grille that's vertically doubled in size while retaining the familiar spread wings pattern. Inside, the major update that grabs everyone's attention is a redesigned dash that sits lower while the center console boldly rises above everything else.

Last year's 7-inch touchscreen has been replaced by an 8-inch display for easier operating. Otherwise, the 2019 Altima maintains such current amenities as power adjustable front seats, dual climate control, a multi-speaker sound system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Strong Performance from a Redesigned Engine

2019 Nissan Altima RearThe biggest news for the coming 2019 Nissan Altima is a trade in engine blocks. Last year's model included a V6 monster that certainly produced enough brawn but wasn't a popular choice for buyers looking at the Altima as an economical sedan. The folks at Nissan got the message and switched out this 3.5 liter engine for a 2 liter 4-cylinder with a turbocharger. The result is a powerplant creating nearly the same power, 248 horsepower, as the 270 horses generated by its predecessor without consuming as much space.

The new 2 liter replacement available in the SR and Platinum models does more than just pack more energy in fewer cubic centimeters. This addition gives drivers a choice between power and fuel savings. Variable compression technology has been included that varies the distance the piston connecting rod can travel while the engine is running. You can choose either 14:1 compression for maximum efficiency or 8:1 compression for top power output.

If you're more inclined to stick with economy over muscle all the time, the 2019 Altima offers the 2.5 liter 4-cylinder block from the previous year as the standard. Even here, though, it's been improved to crank out 188 horsepower instead of the previous 179 horsepower. In keeping with this spirit of change, the 2019 Altima also provides the option of all-wheel drive for its 2.5 liter engine-equipped models.

Is the Nissan Altima Safe for Long Commutes?

2019 Nissan Altima Safety CameraThe 2019 Altima has basics like airbags, anti lock brakes, traction and stability control, tire pressure monitoring, and a rearview camera. Also, like the 2018 Altima, the latest version offers more advanced safety capabilities like front collision alert with automatic braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The newest Altima builds on this by adding pedestrian detection to its front collision system along with lane departure alert capabilities. It even enhances the rearview camera by equipping it with stationary object detection that activates braking to avoid accidents. Additionally, the 2019 installment will offer Nissan ProPILOT assist technology that gives the vehicle level 2 semi-autonomous driving ability.
