Nissan’s Le Mans entry, a GT-R LM NISMO, is out-of-the-box to say the least. In fact, it fascinated car enthusiast and former late-night-TV host Jay Leno so much that he spotlighted it on his YouTube show “Jay Leno’s Garage.” The front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout of the car is amazingly unconventional, but that’s not all that’s interesting about this racecar, which will be driven by Jann Mardenborough.
Of course, Jay didn’t get the actual multimillion dollar racecar on his show, but he did get an identical show car sans engine. One thing he points out is that he appreciates the fact that Nissan didn’t just decide to do their own version of a previous winning car, but instead decided to do something totally unique and largely unseen in the world of motorsports.
Jay talks to Zack Eakin, Chief Engineer for the Nissan LM P1 NISMO, and gets some interesting details about the car’s make up. While most racecars have a mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive platform, Nissan’s goes the complete opposite direction, even adding a distinctive front exhaust exit on the hood. Zack notes that Nissan’s team did everything possible to enhance the car’s aerodynamics and calls its front-heavy formula “clever.”
