It’s essential to know how to properly navigate the road when there are heavy winds. You might not think it on most occasions, but strong winds affect the way you drive and, at times when you get unexpectedly caught in a more severe storm, it’s best to be mindful of these driving best practices.

Keep away from buses, trucks and other large vehicles. Because they’re more affected by strong winds and may have a tendency to sway, it’s best to stay clear of them when wind speeds pick up.

Drive slower and watch for flying debris. Since it’s a bit harder to control vehicles when driving in strong winds, it’s important to drive slower than you usually would, especially if you’re driving a large truck or RV. Also, be careful to watch out for fallen trees and other large debris that may have blown into the streets.

Keep both hands on the wheel. Don’t get caught off guard if a large gust of wind hits; keep your hands at 9 and 3 o’clock at all times when driving in a wind storm.

If you’re in the midst of a haboob, remember the slogan: Pull Aside - Stay Alive. Get off the road before the point of low visibility and turn off your car lights and emergency signals. Keeping them on could confuse other drivers, who might try to follow you because they think you’re on the road.

Other basic but imperative tips to follow include:

Be extra careful changing lanes
Stay off your cellphone and avoid distractions
Keep kids buckled in their seats at all times
Have an emergency kit on hand
